Tents According to Various Places
In past years and during the historical Ottoman Empire period, all tents used were named according to where and how they were used, but the most common ones were always
goat hair tents models. One of these was the sultan's tent, also known as otağ-ı hümayun. These were tents exclusively for sultans in ancient times and used only by them. These models were quite spacious, like halls, with many poles. The interiors were divided into two parts, and in these tents, which were like two nested tents, there were promenade areas separated by curtains around the part where the sultans sat. Guards and warriors would wait here. All sultans would stay in tents during campaigns, and at these times, the tents of viziers and pashas would be nearby. The walls and ceilings of the sultan's tent models were double-layered, with windows made of cloth and rope, and curtains covering them. Accordingly, the interiors were furnished with silk, fur, and carpets.
Innovations in Tent Models
Pasha tents; They were quite spacious and had multiple poles, and their interiors and exteriors were decorated with embroidered canopies. Divan tents, in these tents, the Serdar-ı Ekrams, meaning commanders-in-chief, and grand viziers would hold official receptions, during which war plans were discussed and meals were eaten. Halvet tent, this was a tent exclusive to grand viziers. Similar to the sultan's tents, there was also a type of these tents made of thick cloth for cold weather. At the same time, to prevent the interior from being seen, there was a door in front of its outer hem. Kurba tent, these tent models had no poles in the middle and were used as baths. Hospital tent, these tent models were quite large and were open-sided tent types where sick and injured people were treated. Çile tent or punishment tent, these were single-poled and open-sided tent models, and at the same time, people who committed crimes were punished here, and because their sides were open, all punishments given to the culprits were visible from all sides.
