A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM – EDGAR ALLAN POE
Edgar Allan Poe, an American poet and writer who lived between 1809-1849. Poe, one of the representatives of the Romantic movement, is most widely known in our country for his work "The Raven". Poe; addressed the dark aspects of life and people in his works. He is considered the founder of gothic literature and the short story. He effectively expressed the mental states and unconscious actions of his extraordinary characters with vivid figures of speech and effects. According to Poe, beauty is the soul that poetry appeals to. If there is beauty, there are tears and melancholy. Where there are tears and melancholy, there is Edgar Allan Poe's signature. Poe addressed the theme of "a dream within a dream," which is often discussed with the movie "Inception," years ago in his poem "A Dream Within A Dream."
A Dream Within A Dream
On my brow in my throes
And in words of my pleading,
I confess that –
My days are a dream
Of what I am now dreaming;
But if hope has flown,
In a night or a day
Without any sign
Or even a ray,
Does it matter, although
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream?
I stand by the ocean,
And on a stormy shore,
And clutching with my hand,
The grains of golden sand—
How few! yet how they fall
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep—while I weep!
Oh God! can I not grasp them?
Oh God! can I not save one
From the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
